about

HERE'S A NEW TUNE that concerns a time of traveling and uprootedness circa fall 2014 and finds its setting at the base of the front range of the Rockies, the Flat Iron Foothills, lightly dusted with the first snows. A long string of goodbyes and the hundred pounds of stress that seems to be shed once your tires burn across the Mississippi River bridge. And then theres the Rockies like rows of gleaming icy white towers, beautiful and nightmarish all the same.
~~~~Finally recorded "MOUNDS OF SUGAR" in February 2020 in Cuautitlán Izcalli in the Estado de Mexico. @omarcaveman met me after I took the Buenavista train out of Mexico City and on to his studio, La Rock Labs, where we recorded the song and others on a Tascam 424 and picking on his father's cedar nylon string guitar. It had been a gift from his grandfather in 1973 and was full of a half century of song.~~~~
lyrics
I left that home and all that was
with nothing growing and all that dying
a heart that's swamped only pumps less blood
and grows less fond of a strangers fooling
And stranger she was once to me
Like a roadside bulb that's quick blooming
but stranger was her onion skin
and her cruel heart that soon was cooling
I took my leave I made my vow
I rode the line I brought my hound
From Sego Canyon from The Dalles
my feet were free, a foot off the ground
Now the Flat Iron Hills are like mounds of sugar
first snow of fall from a Denver basement
and from the dark her though returns
but no more time I give to her
Andy Dale Petty Alabama
"Truth emerges more readily from error than from confusion...The dose makes the poison...That which is above is from that which is below, and that which is below is from that which is above, working the miracles of one...The goats have taught me a lot in the past thirty years. They don't, for example, care how I smell or how I look. ." ... more
